We are living in the Geek Renaissance right now with some wonders occurring nearly daily: the Marvel movies (though not everything is good), Coates writing the Black Panther comic, Supergirl (one episode in so far and a little shaky but has potential) , the new Star Wars movie, and now they have announced new Star Trek series starting in 2017!
After hearing my wife squeal in excitement (she loves Next Gen), and after reading about the new Trek, it got me thinking about who my perfect Star Trek crew would be. Before we can talk about the crew, we should decide on the roles. Let's go basic: Captain, First Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Science Officer, Security Chief, Communications Officer, and Chief Engineer. Since Star Trek is known for time jumps, time loops, and general timey-wimey stuff, my crew will be pulled from any of the television shows.
The Crew
Captain: Benjamin Sisko. Without a doubt is my Captain. What clinched it for me are several things:
1. His backstory as a successful working single parent (an incredible feat).
2. He understands that all actions have consequences and still does what is right no matter what.
3. He elevates those around him by trusting in them and providing them an environment to strive in.
4. He has proven himself to be an incredible diplomat and a tactical genius.
First Officer: Spock. Nuff said!
Chief Medical Officer: Beverly Crusher. Another successful single parent, and a skilled medic with an adventurous heart. She never hesitates to heal those in need.
Science Officer: Data. Data could technically do every role on the ship and possibly better than most due to his extensive library of knowledge, enhanced physical abilities and immunities. Those skills are best served in a scientific capacity.
Security Chief: Odo. Odo has an impressive sense of justice, and is capable of being totally impartial, combined with sleuthy Holmes-like deductive skills.
Communications Officer: Nyota Uhura. Uhura is a brilliant linguist and versatile crew member able to take over any role on the bridge, and has on numerous occasions.
Chief Engineer: Montgomery Scott. Not only would his humor serve to help ease tensions about ship, but his true "miracle worker"-level engineer skills and love of any vessel that is "his" makes him the perfect Chief Engineer.
Helmsman: Ro Laren. I hear the NG crowd saying she betrayed the Federation, but wait. Ro has impressive skills, dedicated to trying to find where she can do the most good. With Sisko as Captain (and a religious figure for the Bajorans), she would have the opportunity and environment to flourish in a way that she never had the chance to do before.
Tactical Officer: Worf. Kinda explains itself. Because...Worf.
The Mission
The basic premise of my Star Trek show would be similar to the original, involving a simple five-year mission to explore the depths of the Gamma Quadrant. But by the end of the third episode of the first season, the true conspiracy behind the show would slowly be revealed.
